PASTOR PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE

It is a pleasure to serve as your Moderator for another year. This year is especially exciting as we prepare for Rev. Jean’s sabbatical. It makes me think back to the search committee and meeting Jean for the first time. I knew that we had found a jewel. I find this especially true when other area Churches who were searching for a minister at the same time 6 years ago are now searching for a new minister again. The Williams Bay United Church of Christ is blessed to have Jean as our minister. I am looking forward to working closely with Jean to plan for the sabbatical. As Chair of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee we will be working with Jean to refine her mission statement for the sabbatical. I am looking forward to a great year.

As part of our work on the Pastor Parish Relations committee we would like to share the goals for Jean’s sabbatical.

1. To trust the presence of God, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, to present to me opportunities for spiritual nurture and nourishment, for spiritual growth and renewal, for my continuing discipleship and faithful ministry.

I anticipate this goal to be fulfilled:

-through worship;
-through daily study, devotions, prayer and reflection on scripture;
-through the experience of the spiritual landscape of England, Scotland and the Isle of Iona which represent Reformed, Congregational, Episcopal and Celtic spiritualities;
- through the physical landscape of England, Scotland and Iona as I relax and renew.

2. To recharge my spirit and energy for my return to our congregation and to share with the congregation the experiences, learning, insight, understandings and my refreshed spiritual journey and vision of ministry.

I anticipate this goal to be fulfilled:

-through liturgies, prayers, sermons, music and special worship services that will be incorporated in our worship life;
-through Chronicle articles, discussions and conversations sharing the energy of this spiritual journey;
-through my ministry with the Committees and individuals as we move into the next phase of our life together as a faithful, vibrant and vital community of faith.

If you have any questions please be sure to contact me.

A key component of the first segment of Rev. Jean’s Sabbatical, is set.  Rev. Jean will spend four days on the Isle of Iona.  On this Isle is located Iona Abbey.   One of Scotland's most historic and venerated sites, lona Abbey is a celebrated Christian center and the burial place of early Scottish kings.  The Abbey and Nunnery grounds house one of the most comprehensive collections of Christian carved stones in Scotland, ranging in age from 600AD to the 1600s.

Restoration of the Abbey buildings began in 1938 when Rev George F MacLeod established the Iona Community.  The scheme was designed to unite craftsmen and trainee ministers in the task of renovating the historic site.  Experiencing the physical renewal of the Abbey was intended to prepare the young ministers to achieve spiritual renewal when they returned to their inner city parishes.  The Abbey restoration was completed in 1965.

The Iona Community, a Christian ecumenical community working for peace, social justice, rebuilding of community and the renewal of worship, have continued daily worship in the Abbey Church.    Worship is held daily at 9am and 9 pm with a 2pm Prayer service for justice, peace and creation.  Many people who come to Iona return again - and again. George MacLeod described Iona as a "thin place" - only a tissue paper separating the material from the spiritual. To spend some time in such a historic and inspiring setting is to be open to challenge and the exploration of new horizons.

In addition to the worships and prayer services, Rev. Jean will read, explore the Isle and be open to the “thin place” inviting the Spirit to challenge and inspire her.

Other aspects are still in the planning stages and will be outlined in future articles.

WILLIAMS BAY UCC SABBATICAL

September 12 – October 31, 2011

The Pastor-Parish Relations Committee (PPR), the Council and the Chairs of the Committees are also working on the plans for the time Rev. Jean is on Sabbatical.     Rev. Jean encouraged each Committee to develop a monthly calendar of issues and events for which the committee is responsible.   These are being gathered and compiled into one calendar and will be available soon.

The individual calendars will be used by the Committees to identify how things will be handled during Rev. Jean’s time away.  Each Committee will identify what will happen, how it will take place and who will follow it through.  By identifying this early we have Rev. Jean’s experience to offer us advice and highlight issues that need to be taken into consideration.

Within the next 4-6 weeks the PPR will begin securing and interviewing possible candidates to fill our pulpit, on a part time basis of 12-15hr per week, for the 6 weeks of the Sabbatical.    We are looking for someone who currently has standing in the United Church of Christ and experience in interims and/or sabbatical supply.

The Pastor/Parish Relations Committee is in the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Sabbatical Supply Minister. The announcement of the Sabbatical Supply Minister will be made via a letter to each household as soon as the process is completed. The PPR is also working on a Sabbatical Reference Book that will list all the important information, people and phone numbers needed during Rev. Jean’s time away. The Reference Book will be available at church, mailed to each household and found on the church website – www.uccwb.org

Rev. Jean’s 6 weeks of Sabbatical begins on September 12th. She leaves on September 14th for Great Britain for 4 weeks. While in Great Britain Rev. Jean will spend four nights on the Isle of Iona and worshipping with the Iona Community each day. She will be attending worship at various times and places as she tours England and Scotland. Thanks to the wonders of Kindle Rev. Jean will also include a reading time for personal devotion, meditation and reflection.

Rev. Jean returns to Wisconsin on Oct. 12th and will enjoy a few days of recovering from jetlag before she travels to visit United Theological Seminary of The Twin Cities to renew ties with classmates, friends and professors. Her 6 weeks of Sabbatical ends on October 23rd– the 17th anniversary of her Ordination. She plans to visit Union UCC in Green Bay that Sunday – the church where she was ordained.

Rev. Jean begins a week of vacation October 24. This time will be used to visit family and friends.

Rev. Jean returns to the church office on Nov. 1st and to our worship on Nov. 6th.
