Dear
Friends in Faith,
I want to share with you a recent daily devotional, written by Rev.

Lillian
Daniel, a UCC minister. The Scripture she reflects upon is:
Proverbs 1:
20-33:
“Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the
busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
‘How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?"
“I couldn't stand Sunday school as a kid. Long before the Xerox machine, we
sat on uncomfortable chairs filling in the blanks on worksheets we called
"dittos." …Next came the craft; usually something involving glitter, glue,
uncooked macaroni and pipe cleaners. I hated crafts…
Since then, we've come a long way in children's spiritual formation. At our
Sunday school… children learn the same Bible story by engaging in multiple
ways ….they may be acting out a play, working on computers, making things in
the kitchen. In this way we acknowledge that not every one learns in the
same way.
In today's passage, wisdom cries out in the street. People of faith don't
just learn by being book smart. We need to be street smart as well. There is
more to being a Christian than filling in the blanks on a worksheet. The
church should be forming disciples who can find God's wisdom in all kinds of
activities.
So if you have a Sunday school teacher you appreciate, send them this
devotional, and thank them for moving beyond the simple answers to the
wisdom in the streets.”
I did send this to our Church school teachers – Liz, Laura, Margaret and
Sharon -to let them know I appreciate them. This year we are trying a new
curriculum and a new format that helps them share their faith and engage our
children in multiple ways to hear the stories of faith.
However I also send this to the rest of our church school teachers –
everyone in our congregation, everyone in worship on Sunday mornings,
everyone who sit and visit with our children at coffee hours, work with them
during our fund-raisers, who pray for them. You also share your faith with
our children, teaching them how to be people of faith and members of the
church. It is an awesome responsibility and a wondrous gift as you find
yourself hearing the stories of faith as they share with you.
Thank you all and may God bless you,
Rev. Jean
